Question of the month
Question: Which methodologies are most used to present composite internal dispersion?
-
Range: The difference between the highest and lowest portfolio returns in the composite. While simple, it lacks detail on the distribution of returns. EVIV recommends also showing the Median if a firm chooses the Range methodology, as it provides additional context about the central tendency of the data.
-
Interquartile Range (IQR): Focuses on the middle 50% of returns, excluding outliers. Provides a clearer picture of central dispersion.
-
Standard Deviation: Measures the average deviation of portfolio returns from the composite mean. Highlights volatility and consistency.
-
High/Low Quartile: Shows the top 25% (high quartile) and bottom 25% (low quartile) of returns. Useful for understanding performance extremes.
-
Median Absolute Deviation (MAD): Measures the median of absolute deviations from the composite median. Robust against outliers.

Word of the month
Dispersion
Dispersion measures the variability of returns within a composite, reflecting how individual portfolio performances deviate from the composite’s aggregate return.
In GIPS compliance, low dispersion indicates consistency in strategy execution, while high dispersion may signal inconsistencies.
Understanding dispersion helps investors assess the reliability of performance reporting and risk management.

Picture of the month
The Alhambra Palace in the heart of Spain, truly is the most beautiful Arabic palace in the world. Its intricate Islamic architecture, elegant arches, calligraphy, and tranquil gardens showcase the splendor of Moorish design.
While nestled in Granada, the Alhambra transports visitors to the Golden Age of Al-Andalus, blending Spanish landscapes with Arabic artistry. It’s a unique testament to the cultural fusion that defined medieval Spain—a place where East meets West in the most beautiful way.
